Kundalini Yoga: The Sacred Science of God-Realization

Throughout history, various traditions have guided seekers toward God-realization, and each offering unique yoga approaches to spiritual awakening. Practices such as Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Tantra Yoga, and Kriya Yoga have played significant roles in this journey. Among them, Kundalini Yoga stands out as a powerful discipline that integrates breath control, meditation, and physical postures and activities (kriyas) to awaken Kundalini Shakti—the dormant divine energy at the base of the spine. Kundalini Yoga is a very unique practice introduced to attain the higher state of consciousness. It combines the harmony elements of Hatha Yoga, Raj Yoga, and Gyan yoga and those with vertebrae have the stable energy of the supremely Divine element and the Progressive Energy of the Shakti element placed on the extremities creating a Synergy that leads to the state of non-duality. Kundalini Yoga is a sequence of practices that involves prana, the life force, mann – mind and Atma – Soul where life force is the subject of Hatha Yoga mind is the subject of Raj yoga and soul is the subject of Gyan yoga.

What is Kundalini?

The word Kundalini is derived from ‘kund’ which means pool or a pit. The word ‘kundal’ is drawn from Sanskrit and means coiled up.

This kund is a triangular energy field lying beneath the Mooladhara chakra. This kund is the source of life and destruction so the Kundalini Shakti is a pool of energy that is coiled in its dormant State. Kundalini Shakti is a super Cosmic force that is awakened on the activation of first petal of the Mooladhar chakra and later it travels through the other chakras to reach its final destination of attaining the cosmic bliss.

What is Chakra?

Chakra, a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel,” signifies an ongoing process of eternal movement, like a whirlpool within another. These energy centres contain deep cosmic secrets and help guide spiritual seekers on their chosen path. Each chakra has a specific number of petals, each with a unique vibration, color, and function, rotating from downward to upward when activated. Normally, chakras work automatically to sustain bodily functions, but with specific techniques, they can unlock hidden psychic energies. Since chakras are not physically visible, understanding them requires deep inner exploration and spiritual practice.

For a person to awaken the Kundalini and activate the chakras he has to open the psychic knots. Every knot opened by the aspirant will allow him to reach closer and closer to the process of enlightenment and each level of opening has its own meaning, significance and level of progress.

The Seven Main Chakras in The Human Body

The Power of Kriyas in Kundalini Yoga and Spiritual Growth

Kriyas are spontaneous physical, mental, and emotional expressions and movements that occur after Kundalini awakening, as Shakti (divine energy) purifies the body, mind, and consciousness at physical (gross) and astral levels facilitating spiritual evolution. These involuntary movements and experiences vary for each individual, influenced by past life impressions (karma or sanskaras), energy blockages, and spiritual readiness. They are not hallucinations or random reactions but sacred processes that cleanse the subconscious, purify the chakras, and prepare the seeker for higher consciousness. By surrendering to Shakti and allowing kriyas to unfold naturally, one moves closer to self-realization and spiritual liberation (moksha).

After initiation by the Guru, Kundalini awakens and prana expands, guiding the seeker through transformative kriyas. These sacred expressions of Shakti, awakened by the Guru’s grace, purify body and mind, uplift the consciousness, and deepen unwavering faith in both the Guru and Shakti.

During meditation, each initiate’s experience unfolds in its own sacred way. Some dance, chant, or make symbolic gestures (mudras), while others laugh, cry, or tremble as emotions and energy flow freely. Many feel the vibrant force of Shakti moving through them, naturally entering breathwork, yogic postures, or spontaneous movements. Some receive divine visions, hear sacred sounds, compose poetry, or become deeply absorbed in Universal Consciousness.

Every journey is a personal, intimate expression of the conciousness readiness, guided by Shakti’s infinite grace, that awakens under the divine bliss and lead it toward spiritual liberation.

Kundalini Maha-Yoga – The Path of Surrender

Kundalini Maha-Yoga is a self-proven and self-perfecting spiritual practice, meaning that Kundalini itself causes an initiate to perform kriyas through its own power. This is why it is also called Siddha-Yoga, or “the self-proven path of meditation.” In every aspect—body, mind, and intellect—Shakti itself performs the meditation. The initiate does not need to make any effort; their only duty is complete surrender. The time and way in which Shakti manifests are entirely the work of the divine energy.

Unlike other meditation paths, where one must perform techniques, rituals, or control thoughts, Kundalini Maha-Yoga requires nothing but surrender. Meditation happens naturally, and experiences unfold on their own according to the spiritual state of the seeker.

Is Kundalini Awakening Safe?

Kundalini awakening, when approached through the two authentic paths—either by disciplined practice of Ashtanga Yoga as prescribed by the ancient sages, or by the grace of an enlightened spiritual master who awakens it through his divine energy—is inherently safe. The only essential key is complete surrender to the higher guidance, allowing the divine intelligence to guide the process naturally. There is nothing unsafe about Kundalini itself; the only disturbances arise from misguided, deliberate attempts such as forcing the process through incorrect breathing techniques, the use of intoxicants and drugs, overstrained and unbalanced meditation, or improper food habits. All these only lead to the disturbance in mind, prana and body. These can momentarily disrupt the balance and slow the growth of the awakened energy, but they can never push Kundalini back into its dormant state. Once awakened, it continues its upward evolution, shaped by your past and present karmic impressions, supported by an ethical way of living, and nourished by unwavering faith in the Master. In truth, Kundalini is the most natural and transformative force within, and when treated with wisdom, purity, and surrender, it leads unfailingly toward higher consciousness.
